01 Sep Gilbert & George Fournier St London 1983

This image is in the permanent collection of The National Portrait Gallery and show’s G&G unposed as they sit in the front room of their house in Fournier St. It was one of the images shown as part of my 2017 exhibition at the NPG called Before We Were Men
I’d met them in a nightclub called Planets in a basement bar in Piccadilly in 1982/3. They were with Norman Rosenthal of the RA and all three were dressed in formal suits, standing out from the young Blitz kid crowd. Boy George was dj-ing, playing stuff like The Sweet and Gary Glitter and bands from the 70’s that had gone out of fashion but were meaningful to us. (Long before Glitter’s fall from grace) They loved my white camera and agreed to be photographed… find out what happened in my book The White Camera Diaries available at pink jack.com
