Joe Tilson in the NPG (ripped torn) 1988

This is an early example of a photograph I ripped. Perfection in photography – prints that were perfect and precious had been de rigueur for years and I was rebelling against this. It felt punk. Also Matisse had his cut-outs and the Italian futurists had ripped and pierced their canvasses. It felt a continuation of this.
