Leigh Bowery in his Fur Coat Farrell House Whitechapel London 1983

This portrait is also in the permanent collections of both The National Portrait Gallery London and Australia.  It was taken in Leigh’s council flat in East London. Robert Violette, who did the renowned photo book on Leigh, which includes portraits by Annie Leibovitz and Lucien Freud, commented that this portrait session was the first time an artist had treated Leigh as a serious subject and that he felt Leigh knew it counted as a ‘moment’ in his own rise. This picture and another from the session appear first in the Violette book placing them in historical context.
