Leigh Bowery

Leigh Bowery in fur coat. Farrell House. Circa 1983

This portrait is also in the permanent collection of the Australian National Portrait Gallery. It was taken in Leigh’s council flat in East London. Robert Violette, who did the renowned photo book on Leigh, which includes portraits by Annie Leibovitz and Lucien Freud, commented that this portrait session was the first time an artist had treated Leigh as a serious subject. This picture and another from the session appear first in the book placing them in historical context.
